International meeting on “The TRIPS Agreement, the Doha Declaration on TRIPS and Public Health, the Bangui Agreement, and access to medicines”, November 23th 2015, UNAIDS, Geneva, Switzerland.
This meeting brought together various experts as well as the directors of the national liaison services with OAPI, diplomats from French-speaking African countries at the UN in Geneva, directors in charge of pharmacy, medicine and laboratories from West Africa and civil society organisations.
The objective was to analyze barriers to access to medicines in the least developed countries of Africa and to present recommendations for action.
The meeting focused on the following points:
- Flexibilities of the TRIPS Agreement (1999) of the World Trade Organization (WTO)
- The 6 November 2015 decision of the TRIPS Council on the extension of the transitional period (2033).
- The 1999 Revised Bangui Agreement of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI)
- The local production of generics in French-speaking countries in West and Central Africa
